Being wrong has been made out to be a bad thing. But is always being right such a good thing? My mom used to say, “I may not always be right, but I’m never wrong”. I’ll give her credit for getting it half right.
I’m guessing that all of us know someone who “thinks” they’re always right, right? So here’s the $100 question…Do you admire this person? Does their being right bring you closer to them? We already know the answers… It’s ok to be right, but it’s even better if we can be right gracefully, and allow others to learn without feeling wrong.
So here is where I make my public confession… I know a bit about all of this because I’m one of those people who LOVES to be right, I am very passionate about the things I believe in, and I enjoy arguing for what I think is right. What I’m beginning to learn (slowly) is that when I stop myself from being the first to raise my hand, or when I bite my lip when someone gets it wrong, is that I may still be right, but I don’t have to be an ass about it.
So, what to do today?
- Catch yourself being wrong.
- Take a deep breath.
- Now, repeat after me… “I” “am” ”wrong”.
- Apologize if it’s warranted (it usually is).
- Go on about your day.
Let us know how it’s going for you, and pat yourself on the back when you get it “right”.
